Cloud Engineer Hiring Manager Contact: Find Who Answers for the Cloud Bill
Ad Call reads the live cloud engineer ads in your market and hands back, for each employer, the platform, DevOps or infrastructure manager most likely to own the req: name, title, email and office line, graded by confidence, with how long the ad has been open. That is usually the same person who has to explain the cloud invoice every month.
The cloud engineer req was approved the same week someone in finance opened the cloud invoice.
Find the cloud engineer hiring managers in my market — freeWho hires cloud engineers
Cloud engineers are hired by whoever owns the cloud platform: a platform engineering manager or DevOps manager at most mid-size and large employers, an infrastructure or cloud operations manager at more traditional IT shops. That manager owns the architecture, the on-call rotation and, increasingly, the bill. At a smaller company the IT director or CTO is the seat. Managed service providers and cloud consultancies are employers too, not vendors to route around: their delivery or practice manager hires cloud engineers to run customers' environments. Software engineering managers use the platform but rarely own this req.
- Senior / Staff Cloud EngineerRuns the technical screen and can veto on provider depth. Doesn't own headcount.
- DevOps Manager / Manager, DevOpsOwns the req where cloud sits inside a DevOps team. Knows the provider, the tooling and the backlog.
- Platform Engineering Manager / Manager, Platform Engineeringusually owns the reqThe most common owner at mid-size and larger employers. Answers for reliability and, often, cost.
- Senior Manager, DevOps / Director of InfrastructureApproves headcount and owns migration budgets. Call for a multi-hire migration team.
- CTO / IT Director (smaller companies) or MSP practice managerAt a small company or a managed service provider, this is the hiring seat, not an escalation.
What Ad Call gives you for a cloud engineer ad
Ad Call names the platform or DevOps manager first and the next infrastructure leader second. Signals show days open, reposts, and which provider and tools the ad names, plus migration or cost language, so you can tell a lift-and-shift team from an optimization hire before you call.
- The repost added cost language: someone above the manager is asking about the bill.
- AWS-only with Savings Plans in the ad: pitch a candidate who has cut a real AWS invoice, not a generalist.
- A month open for a mid-level cloud role usually means the screen is strict on one provider.
Why cost control is the manager's hidden priority
Most cloud engineer job descriptions read like a tool list. The pressure behind them is money. Flexera's 2026 State of the Cloud report, based on a survey of more than 750 cloud decision-makers, found that managing cloud spend remains a top challenge for 85% of organizations and that estimated wasted cloud spend rose to 29%, the first increase in five years.
The people who police that spend have moved closer to engineering. The FinOps Foundation's State of FinOps 2026, with 1,192 respondents representing more than $83 billion in annual cloud spend, reports that 78% of FinOps teams now report to the CTO or CIO, and that workload optimization and waste reduction remain a leading priority. Translation for your pitch: the platform manager who owns this req is being asked about the invoice, and a candidate who has cut one is worth more than a candidate with one more certification.
Put numbers in the pitch when your candidate has them: the monthly bill they managed, the percentage they cut, the rightsizing, reserved capacity or autoscaling changes that did it. A manager can repeat that sentence to their boss. They can't repeat “strong AWS skills.”
AWS, Azure or Google Cloud: match the provider, then the phase
Provider depth is the first screen. Cross-cloud pitches stall because the manager has to train the new hire on their own provider's services, identity model and tooling. Then match the migration phase, because each phase wants a different engineer.| AWS | Microsoft Azure | Google Cloud | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Anchor certification | AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate (SAA-C03); AWS says it covers cost- and performance-optimized design and recommends a year of hands-on AWS experience | Azure Administrator Associate (AZ-104); Microsoft lists a 12-month renewal cycle | Associate Cloud Engineer; Google recommends 6+ months hands-on and certifies for 3 years |
| Where you often see it | Software and data-heavy companies; many startups | Enterprises already standardized on Microsoft identity and licensing | Analytics and data-platform teams; some digital-native companies |
| Ask your candidate | Which services they ran in production and how they managed IAM across accounts | How they handled Entra ID, subscriptions and governance | How they managed projects, IAM and GKE or BigQuery costs |
| Planning phase wants | Architects who can size, estimate cost and design landing zones | Same, plus hybrid connectivity to existing data centers | Same, with data platform design |
| Migration (lift) phase wants | Hands-on engineers who move workloads fast with infrastructure as code | Engineers comfortable with hybrid and Windows workloads | Engineers who can move data pipelines without breaking them |
| Optimization phase wants | Engineers who can read the bill: rightsizing, Savings Plans, tagging | Reservations, rightsizing, cost governance | Committed use discounts, rightsizing, cost labeling |
How to pitch a cloud engineer candidate to the hiring manager
Run through this before you submit. Every line answers a question the platform manager will ask in the first five minutes.- Provider match: the same provider as the ad, in production, in the last two years.
- Scale: accounts or subscriptions managed, workloads, monthly spend in their care.
- Cost proof: one concrete saving with a number and how it was achieved.
- Infrastructure as code: Terraform, CloudFormation, Bicep or Pulumi, and whether they wrote modules or just applied them.
- Containers and orchestration: Kubernetes on the provider's managed service if the ad mentions it.
- Migration phase experience that matches where the company is: planning, moving or optimizing.
- On-call history and incident ownership, since platform teams share a pager.
- Security and identity: how they handled access, secrets and compliance in a regulated environment if the employer is in health, finance or government.
Email the manager who answers for the invoice
Lead with provider and cost, in that order. Keep it to what a platform manager can forward to their director unchanged.I saw your cloud engineer opening, now with cost optimization in the title.
I'm representing an AWS engineer who ran EKS and roughly 40 AWS accounts for a healthcare SaaS company. Last year she led rightsizing and a Savings Plans program that took their monthly bill down about a third without an incident, all in Terraform. She holds the Solutions Architect Associate and has been on the platform on-call rotation for three years.
Worth 15 minutes this week to see if she fits what your director is asking for?

Questions recruiters ask about cloud engineer reqs
- Who hires cloud engineers?
Usually a platform engineering manager or DevOps manager, sometimes an infrastructure or cloud operations manager. At a smaller company the IT director or CTO. At managed service providers and cloud consultancies, the delivery or practice manager hires cloud engineers to run customer environments.
- What do cloud engineer recruiter tips usually miss?
Cost. Managers are asked about the cloud bill constantly, and a candidate who can show a concrete saving stands out. The other miss is provider mismatch: an Azure-heavy candidate pitched to an AWS-only team usually stalls at the technical screen.
- How should I handle 'we're going multi-cloud'?
Ask which provider runs production today and which is being added. Multi-cloud usually means one primary provider plus a second for specific workloads. Pitch depth on the primary and working knowledge of the second, not a generalist who is shallow on both.
- Who is the AWS cloud engineer hiring manager, and who hires for Azure?
The same seat, on a different platform: whoever owns the production cloud environment, usually a platform engineering or DevOps manager. Azure roles often sit under a traditional infrastructure or IT operations manager at companies already built on Microsoft, so expect that title on Azure-heavy results. Demand isn't going away; the BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook expects continued expansion of cloud computing to increase demand for network architects who design and move infrastructure.
- When is the best time to reach a cloud engineer hiring manager?
Mid-week, late morning, after stand-ups and before afternoon change windows. Avoid days after a major outage and the end of a quarter when migration milestones are due. A reposted ad with new cost or migration language is a good moment to call.
