QA Engineer Hiring Manager Contact: Reach the Person Who Owns Releases

Ad Call reads the live QA engineer ads in your market and returns, for each company, the QA manager or engineering manager most likely to own the req, with name, title, email and office line, graded by confidence and marked with how long the ad has been open. You talk to the person who signs off on releases, not the applicant tracking system.

'QA engineer' covers someone who clicks through test cases and someone who writes the test framework. The hiring manager only wants one of them.

Who hires QA engineers

Where a company has quality leadership, the QA manager (or quality engineering manager) owns the req. On many smaller or fast-moving teams there is no QA manager at all, and the req belongs to the engineering manager of the team the tester will join. In that case the engineering manager is the hiring manager, full stop, and they will judge a QA candidate like a developer: can they write code that other engineers are willing to maintain? Directors of engineering approve headcount; technical recruiters run the pipeline.

What Ad Call gives you for a QA engineer ad

Ad Call names the QA manager when the company has one and the engineering manager when it does not, with a second name for context. Signals worth reading: days live, whether the ad lists automation frameworks and a programming language, and whether developer roles are open at the same company, which usually means more code is shipping than anyone is testing.

Why call today
  • More developers are being hired than testers; regression coverage is falling behind every sprint.
  • The ad names Playwright and TypeScript. A candidate who has built a suite in that stack is a direct fit, not a maybe.
  • Almost six weeks open on an automation role usually means the pipeline is full of manual testers.
Illustrative sample — the layout and labels are the real console's; the company and people are fictional.

Manual vs. automation vs. SDET: what the ad is really asking for

The BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook describes QA analysts and testers as implementing software testing using either manual or automated programs and exploratory testing. On job ads, the same title covers all of it. Sort the req before you search.

Who hires QA engineers, and the one question to ask first

The first thing to ask any QA manager is not years of experience or industry. It is: does this person need to write test code, and in what? The answer sorts the req into one of the three columns above. Then ask your candidate the same question in reverse: show me a test you wrote, explain how it runs in the pipeline, and tell me the last flaky test you fixed and why it was flaky.

Pitch release confidence, not activity. A QA manager's worst week is a production incident that a test should have caught, followed by a meeting about it. Candidates who talk about test counts sound like activity; candidates who talk about shortening a regression cycle, catching an API break before release, or getting developers to trust the suite sound like relief.

Skills are shifting, and the World Quality Report 2025-26 captures it: generative AI ranked as the top skill for quality engineers (63%), followed by core quality engineering skills (60%), while 43% of organizations were experimenting with generative AI in QA and only 15% had scaled it enterprise-wide. For a recruiter that means two things: a candidate who has used AI tools to generate or maintain tests is worth highlighting, and fundamentals still decide the hire.

Myths that sink QA submissions

Many rejected QA submissions fail for the same few reasons. Clear these before you send a resume.
MythAn ISTQB certificate proves the candidate can do the job.
RealityThe ISTQB Foundation Level (CTFL) exam is 40 multiple-choice questions covering testing fundamentals, test design, test management and tools. It shows a shared vocabulary. It does not show that someone can write or maintain automated tests, which is what most QA managers are screening for.
MythListing Selenium, Cypress and Playwright on a resume means automation experience.
RealityAsk which one they used most recently, what language, and who else maintained the suite. Framework names without a story fail the first technical screen.
MythManual testers are obsolete.
RealityPlenty of teams still need strong exploratory and domain testing, especially in regulated or complex workflows. The mistake is sending a manual tester to an automation req, not placing manual testers at all.
MythAny developer can fill an SDET role.
RealitySDETs need to think like testers: edge cases, test data, what to automate and what not to. A developer who has never owned test strategy often builds a suite nobody trusts.
MythTest case counts impress QA managers.
RealityOutcomes impress them: regression time cut, escaped defects down, a flaky suite made reliable.

Best time to contact a QA engineer hiring manager

QA calendars follow releases. In the days before a release, especially during a code freeze or a regression run, QA managers are triaging bugs and are not reading outreach. The best window is the first few days after a release ships, when the retrospective has just reminded everyone how thin coverage is, and early in a sprint before the next crunch.

An open QA ad next to several new developer ads is a strong signal: code volume is rising faster than test capacity. Ad Call shows both in the same company result, along with how long the QA ad has run. Run your market free.

QA engineer hiring manager email: pitch release confidence

Lead with the stack match, then the outcome. QA managers skim for the framework and language first.
SubjectPlaywright/TypeScript QA engineer who cut regression from 2 days to 3 hours
Hi Nadia,

Your QA automation opening lists Playwright, TypeScript and API testing in CI.

I'm representing a QA engineer who built exactly that at a health-tech company: a Playwright suite in TypeScript with API contract tests, running on every pull request. She took their regression pass from two days of mostly manual testing to about three hours, and she cleaned up the flaky tests developers had stopped trusting.

With three developer roles open on your side, I'd guess coverage is the pressure point. Would a 15-minute call this week be useful? Happy to send a short summary and a code sample she can share.

Thanks,
Riley Tran

Why it works: it matches the stack in the first line, gives one before-and-after outcome, and connects to a signal the manager already knows about. The QA manager's name and email come from the Ad Call result, so it reaches the person who owns the release, not the careers inbox.

Questions recruiters ask about qa engineer reqs

Who hires QA engineers?

The QA manager or quality engineering manager where one exists. On teams without QA leadership, the engineering manager of the team the tester joins is the hiring manager. Directors of engineering approve headcount.

What is the best time to contact a QA engineer hiring manager?

The first days after a release ships, and early in a sprint. Avoid code freezes, regression runs and release weeks, and in regulated software avoid validation periods.

Test automation engineer: who hires, and how is it different from QA?

Automation engineers are usually hired by the QA manager or an engineering manager who needs someone to write and maintain automated tests. Qualify the framework and language before submitting; an automation req filled with a manual tester is a common rejection.

Does ISTQB certification matter to QA managers?

It shows knowledge of testing concepts and vocabulary; the Foundation Level is also the prerequisite for ISTQB's advanced certifications. Most automation-focused managers weight a code sample or framework story far more heavily.
